Backlink View:
The Backlink View shows all the notes, cards, or items that link to the current note. This feature helps users discover the network of relationships between their ideas and understand how a specific note is referenced across the workspace.
When the Backlink View is enabled, it displays a list of all notes that link to the current one. Each entry shows the name of the linking note and a small text snippet around the link, providing context for how it was mentioned. This makes it easier to navigate related ideas and maintain a connected personal knowledge base.
In Obsidian, the Backlink View includes two modes:
Linked Mentions: Notes that contain an actual link to the current note.
Unlinked Mentions: Notes that mention the current note’s title in plain text but are not yet linked.
This view gives users a complete understanding of reverse connections between their notes — an essential feature for “linked thinking” and knowledge management workflows.
Graph View:
The Graph View is a visual map of relationships between all notes in your workspace. Each note is represented as a node, and every link between notes is shown as a line (edge) connecting them. This visualization helps users see their thinking network, discover hidden connections, and identify central or key notes within their system.
In Obsidian, there are two types of Graph View:
Global Graph: Displays the entire network of notes in one global view.
Local Graph: Displays only the current note and its directly connected links.
Users can click on nodes to open notes, zoom and drag to explore the network, and apply filters by tags, folders, or link depth. For visual thinkers and those who rely on contextual connections between ideas, this view provides a clear and interactive understanding of their knowledge structure.
Together, Backlink View and Graph View form the foundation of the “Second Brain” approach in Obsidian. They give users a transparent overview of how their ideas are connected, making navigation, exploration, and synthesis of information much easier.
